Safe Journeys Abuelito Benedicto

Manu Sai Malasquez

Benedicto and Antonia Pacompia, Island of Amantani, Lake Titicaca, Peru.

There are people in your life and then there are majestic people in your life. True kings who live on in the kingdom of the heart no matter when you see them again. I met Benedicto Pacompia on a boat on the way to the Island of Amantani on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca along with my parents when i was 15 years old.  We ended up being sent to his home as the tourists where split up and sent to the homes of the islanders on a rotation basis. Besides weaving and agriculture, tourism has always helped the island people. We were so touched by his families love and genuine welcome that my parents ended up creating a kindergarten and had it going for twenty years along with Benedicto and his family.  I will always remember catching frogs and showing them to Benedicto and his eyes twinkling as he smile spread so elegantly across his brown face. He has always been a father figure for me and I was so saddened about his passing a few weeks ago. The love of a father and grandfather who had always lived on his ancestors island was readily available from him at a moments notice. He would tell me stories about tunnels going under the lake and then join me in san pedro ceremonies and pray whole heartedly at the sacred vedic fire for all beings without any judgment.  A true gem of a man for whom the color of someones skin or language they spoke made no difference for him, we were all family. I love you Grandpa, safe journeys.

Interestingly enough, my wife and I will be on the Island of Amantani next month for the day of the dead and will be praying for the high Andean plateau and all of her residents, four legged, two legged, winged and scaled. Lake Titicaca is an important vortex on this planet and has a lot to give us in the form of energy and wisdom. Some say that Lemuria was located there as well as ancient monasteries and cloisters of light. My prayer for this dia de los muertos will be for the Apus, ancient mountain spirits that carry the life giving water in the form of snow, They are melting rapidly in Bolivia and need replenishing. In some places it is cheaper to buy Coca Cola then water.  May Benedicto's love for the lake, his family and people help carry these prayers of sustenance and hope in a good way and bless us all.

Thank you Papacho Lindo

I will always talk about you and your beloved Island, you will always live in my heart..
